Aston Union Crowned 2011 Indoor Champions

In February the Aston Union (U9 girls’ club team) embarked on their first indoor soccer season at the Maple Zone center, located just outside of Aston. During the regular season, which ran until the beginning of April, the Union compiled a record of 7-1-0. The team’s sole loss (a 1-0 game) came at the feet of the BYC Blast, who also finished with a record of 7-1-0.

The Union compiled a goal differential of +22 (the Union scored 24 and let in only two goals all season), while the Blast had a differential of +7 (12 scored and five allowed). Because of the head-to-head loss versus the Blast, however, the Union finished in second place.

The Union faced the Rose Tree Red Stars in the first round of the playoffs and won 3-1. The Blast also won their opening round versus the BYC Lightning 1-0, setting up a rematch of number one versus number two for the championship!

As in the regular season, the game was a tough, low-scoring affair. There were many physical plays and, in the first half, the Blast were called for a hand ball foul in the box. The subsequent penalty shot was taken by Hannah Vickers and she blasted it into the top left corner for a beautiful goal. The second half was well contested but the Union’s mid-fielders and defense did not allow a single shot and Olivia Nickerson and Leah Czaplicki combined for a shutout in net —final score, 1-0!

With the win in hand, the girls began to cheer and shout as the clock wound down, putting a wonderful ending on a fun and exciting first indoor season!

Overall, the Union had a very successful first year, going a combined 24-2-5 in our fall, indoor seasons and three tournaments. Both of the team’s losses this season were scores of 1-0 and, although the team dominated play, they were unable to put it past the other team’s goalie.

The team is looking forward to the upcoming U10 season and continued success!
