2011 Aston Community Day

2011 Aston Community Day

The annual Aston Township Community Day will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011. The event will begin with a parade going from Neumann University to the Aston Township Community Center. Aston Youth Soccer Association participates every year, but starting this year, we really want to show our neighbors what we are all about. Most if not all games have been moved to late in the day on Saturday or Sunday to allow our players to participate in the parade and other festivities. We really want to see a great turnout for the parade, and we are asking that if at all possible, every player come and march in the parade wearing your team jersey.

If you would like to participate in the parade, you will need to be at Neumann no later than 9 am.

This is a great opportunity to show off our AYSA pride so please come out and help support the organization!

AYSA Girls Dominate at Ridley Tournament

AYSA Girls Dominate Ridley Tournament

At any giving soccer tournament, it is not uncommon to see numerous teams from one association entered — especially those that are local to the tournament. What is uncommon is for one association to have all its competing teams come away with trophies from that tournament. Such was the case with AYSA and the five girls’ squads entered into the Ridley United Invitational Soccer Tournament on August 13.

The AYSA girls’ Club teams put on an impressive show:

  • Three championships (U12 Galaxy, U13 Tornados, U15 Earthquakes)
  • Two runners-up (U10 Union, U11 Strikers)
  • A combined 13-2 tournament record amongst all the AYSA teams

Congratulations to all the girls and their coaches, especially those with the U11 Strikers, who are a new Club team and played their first games together during this tournament. Although they lost their championship game on a last-second goal, they played throughout the day as if they had been together for years!

Earthquakes Avenge 2009 Finals Loss to Win 2011 Championship

It was sweet revenge for the U15 Earthquakes, who won their Championship game 2-0 over a Methacton team that denied them a championship in last year’s Ridley tournament. Megan Cage and Claudia McLaughlin each scored for the Earthquakes, who also took advantage of stellar play by their defense and the second shutout of the day from backup keeper Maddy Thornton.

The Earthquakes began the tourney win a win over Haverford, 3-1. Proud dad (and Earthquakes coach) Anthony Skwirut watched as his daughters, Emily and Madison (on loan from the U13 Tornados), took care of all the scoring the team would need. Emily found the back of the net once while Madison scored twice! The Earthquakes followed up with a 2-0 win over Rose Tree with goals by Megan Cage and Emily Skwirut.

The two wins sent the Earthquakes into the Championship game and a rematch vs. a strong Methacton team. This time, not even playing in a torrential downpour could keep the Earthquakes from the win! It was a great job by all the girls!

Tornados Go From ‘Finalist’ to ‘Champion’ in a Week and a Year

In 2010, the Tornados were finalists in the annual Ridley tournament with a loss on penalty kicks in the Championship game. The team came into this year’s Ridley tournament a week after they played some of their best soccer and were finalists in the CRUSA/FC Bucks Invitational Tournament — determined to get the trophy without a squiggly line on it!

The U13 Tornados began the day with a tight, back-and-forth contest with the Rose Tree Rebels. Left-winger Madelyn Judge finally broke free and delivered a beautiful ball across the net to where right-winger Claire Howley was crashing and smashed it in! The goal was the only one of the game and, combined with stellar a stellar performance from the defense and keeper Tessa Mazzarella, was all the Tornados needed for the win.

Game two pitted the Tornados against the Chichester Cheetahs — a team that had had the Tornados’ number up until that point. Midfielder Madison Hengey found the net twice for the Tornados — once just inside the 18 and then from downtown on a long foul kick that glanced off the fingertips of the leaping Chi keeper and into the net. Although the Cheetahs made a late-game push and found the net once off a corner kick, the defense held strong and this round belonged to the Tornados!

Mother Nature almost proved too volatile to let the Championship game get underway (and then unleashed a downpour onto the field for half the game)! Once the game did begin, the Tornados found themselves up against another Rose Tree team — this time the Rampage — but the results were much the same. Mid-fielder Emily Simpson and center forward Jordan Johnson joined Madelyn Judge and Claire Howley in a party at the back of the net as the Tornados posted a 4-0 shutout and a dominant Championship win!

Technically a New Team, Strikers Prove to be Masters of the Pitch

The U11 Strikers chose Ridley as their first tournament AND their first games together (and had a pretty good day and start to their record)!

The team started off the day with a 5-0 win over Garnet Valley Thunder. Kyra Green and Jess Stewart led combined for the shutout in net while Jaimee Higgins and Gianna Occhiolini stood tall on defense. On the other end of the pitch, Sami Bowen and Nadine Novotni each had two goals and Kylie Lovelace found the back of the net with a pretty shot from about 20 yards out.

The second game was a 3-0 win over HFGRC Lazers — the second shutout of the day from keeper Kyra Green, with another great defensive stance by Claudia Davis, Gabby DiBernardino and Julia Oppelt. Wings Anastasia Kluka, Jada Wood and Grace Howley did a fantastic job moving the ball up the field and to Nadine Novotni (2 goals) and Sami Bowen (1 goal).

The Strikers’ Championship game pitted them against the Rose Tree Cheetahs — and although the game began in hot and windy conditions, it ended in a downpour of rain! The score was tied at zero at halftime, but it was a see-saw battle in the second half. The Strikers took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a great shot by Sami Bowen — only to have Rose Tree tie the game a few moments later! The Strikers then went up 2-1 on a blast from Gianna Daley, but Rose Tree tied it up again with about five minutes to play. With minutes left to play, the field was getting sloppy. With less than 30 seconds left in the contest, Rose Tree scored on a wet ball that slipped through the hands of the Striker keeper.

Although it was a tough loss in even tougher conditions, second place was a great finish for the new squad. Overall it was a fantastic day and a great test for the new team and coaches and parents alike were proud of all the girls!

Galaxy Dominate Opponents on Both Sides of the Field

Aston Galaxy girls U-12 stated their season with three games in the Ridley United Invitational soccer Tournament.  In the first game they  beat the Springfield Stingers 5-0. Game two Galaxy beat the Rose Tree Mustangs 3-0.  Game three was against the RUSC Dynamite.  This game was to decide the Champion of the tournament.  Aston prevailed and won 3-0. Goal scorers in the tournament included Victoria Anderson, Casey Purfield, Deanna Baker, Lindsey Haseltine, and Leah Roth.  Aston controlled the play in all games with excellent ball control and good passing.  Sharing the three shutouts in goal were Devon Linn and

Aston Union Crowned 2011 Indoor Champions

In February the Aston Union (U9 girls’ club team) embarked on their first indoor soccer season at the Maple Zone center, located just outside of Aston. During the regular season, which ran until the beginning of April, the Union compiled a record of 7-1-0. The team’s sole loss (a 1-0 game) came at the feet of the BYC Blast, who also finished with a record of 7-1-0.

The Union compiled a goal differential of +22 (the Union scored 24 and let in only two goals all season), while the Blast had a differential of +7 (12 scored and five allowed). Because of the head-to-head loss versus the Blast, however, the Union finished in second place.

The Union faced the Rose Tree Red Stars in the first round of the playoffs and won 3-1. The Blast also won their opening round versus the BYC Lightning 1-0, setting up a rematch of number one versus number two for the championship!

As in the regular season, the game was a tough, low-scoring affair. There were many physical plays and, in the first half, the Blast were called for a hand ball foul in the box. The subsequent penalty shot was taken by Hannah Vickers and she blasted it into the top left corner for a beautiful goal. The second half was well contested but the Union’s mid-fielders and defense did not allow a single shot and Olivia Nickerson and Leah Czaplicki combined for a shutout in net —final score, 1-0!

With the win in hand, the girls began to cheer and shout as the clock wound down, putting a wonderful ending on a fun and exciting first indoor season!

Overall, the Union had a very successful first year, going a combined 24-2-5 in our fall, indoor seasons and three tournaments. Both of the team’s losses this season were scores of 1-0 and, although the team dominated play, they were unable to put it past the other team’s goalie.

The team is looking forward to the upcoming U10 season and continued success!

The U9 Aston Union enjoyed a successful inaugural season and are poised for further success. In the first row (r to l) are Juliana McHugh, Leah Czaplicki, Ava Ruggieri, Hannah Vickers, Jacqueline Oldham and Bridget Duffy. In the second row are Shannon Purfield, Olivia Nickerson, Tara France, Sara June, Madelyn Mager and Kassidy Lambert. IN the third row are Coaches Greg France, Keith Vickers and Chris Lambert. Union players not present: Samantha Hoy and Lauren Albrecht.
