The Hunter Jack Walsh Memorial Tournament in Abington Pa was a success for the Aston Union (U-10 girls club).  The girl’s took home the tournament victory.  This is how the event unfolded.

On a crisp bright early fall Saturday morning the Union started slow facing the Fairmount Falcons falling behind 2 – 0.  During halftime the coaches asked the girls to win the second half.  They did just that scoring twice.  It felt like a win with the excitement generated the match ending tied 2-2.  The Union girl’s secured first place on Saturday with a dominate 3-1 win over the Springfield Arsenal.  The Union’s defense was suffocating; Springfield managed just one shot and received a very fortuitous bounce to get their lone goal.  This meant the first game on Sunday would determine who would advance to the championship game. The standings at the end of Saturday were Aston Union 14 points the Fairmount Falcons 9 points and the Springfield Arsenal 3 points.

Playing against the Hunter Wolves a dominate performance was put forth by the Aston Union.  The Union girl’s kept up an intense pressure all game.  The final score was 3-0 with the Wolves registering only 2 shots; the entire match was played in the Wolves half of the pitch.  The championship game against the VE Valkyrie stands as a testament to the gritty make up of the fierce Aston players.  The first half was a tough fought battle with the Union and the Valkyrie tied 0-0. The game was incredibly physical but not dirty; several players on both squads hit the turf in tears.  At half time the coaches reminded the girls that no one can stay with them when they play at their best.  The second half began as the first, physical and evenly matched.  The Valkyries scored on a scramble in front of the Union’s net to take a 1-0 lead.  The Union girl’s were undaunted and arose to the challenge scoring 4 unanswered goals.   The final score being 4-1 and securing another tournament championship, the Union players leapt with joy and cheered when the ref ended the game.  The girl’s received first place medals and the team was given a beautiful trophy which each girl will have for a couple of nights.  Then the trophy will be donated to the AYSA club.  To see more about the Aston Union click HERE.
